A firm is set to purchase what will become one of the largest solar energy farms in the country.

Greenwood Sustainable Infrastructure (GSI) has announced the acquisition of the Homestead Solar Project from Kiwetinohk Energy (KEC).

GSI CEO Mazen Turk says, “The acquisition of the Homestead Solar Project represents a significant milestone in expanding GSI’s clean energy presence within the Canadian market. With talent and perseverance at the core, the GSI team is driving our bold growth across North America’s clean energy market.”

The Homestead Solar Project will be located approximately 11 kilometres southeast of Claresholm.

Once completed, it will have the capacity to generate up to 556 megawatt hours of direct current energy.

According to Devin Petteplace, a spokesperson with GSI, the project is estimated to create enough energy to power the equivalent of 100,000 homes, making it the second-largest solar project in Canada.

The exact dollar amount for the acquisition is not yet known, as Petteplace told LNN that many moving parts still need to be worked out.

Construction could begin as early as the fourth quarter of 2025, and it should be completed within one-to-two years.

GSI is planning to hold public information events sometime in October, where more details on the project and the acquisition will be shared.

GSI is a subsidiary of Libra Group. The company owns 82 renewable energy projects, and with the completion of the Homestead Solar Project, it will have a 2.1 gigawatt capacity and 340 megawatts of battery storage.
