New Civic Centre murals depict Lethbridge’s history

Tolman told LNN that he spoke with the City of Lethbridge to see what they could use it for, and together, they decided to highlight the history of Lethbridge and local sports.

The first mural is from the 1920s and shows what was then known as Main Street.

“Main Street is still dirt on that photo,” he says. “It’s just an amazing photograph for how old it is.”

The second image is of the Civic Ice Centre, which first opened its doors in 1950, when it was still relatively new.

The third was taken in 1907 or 1908, and it depicts the High Level Bridge when it was still under construction.

Tolman says the fourth photo was perhaps the most interesting because he did not realize how special it was.

He and his team were asked to look through the archives of the Galt Museum for old photos of hockey teams and they found one that they thought looked good.

“We had three different people drop by, and each of them, their fathers were on the hockey team, and that was the 1951 Lethbridge Maple Leafs. They were the world champions in France that year, and I guess the next year, they won the Olympic gold medal,” says Tolman.

The fifth and sixth photos depict local curling and hockey teams.

He is currently working on installing another six murals, which will feature a figure skater and track and field athletes.
