“I’m just beside myself looking at these numbers – they’re spectacular this year!”

Austin Moloughney, one of the organizers of the Lethbridge Terry Fox Run, made the exclamation as he announced the preliminary donation total for this year’s event.

He says the fundraising goal was $7,900.

Online donations alone were around $11,000. Moloughney says there was also $2,200 in cash and cheques, $1,620 in t-shirt sales, and more than $3,000 in online merchandise sales.

Included in those amounts is a promised $1,000 cheque from Terry Fox’s uncle, who resides in Lethbridge.

Altogether, Moloughney estimates that more than $17,000 was donated.

He says he is proud of the community coming together in such strong numbers to support cancer research at the Terry Fox Foundation, adding that it being the 45th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope must have helped.

“With just the promotion we were able to do with the help of all the media sources, from radio to television news and newspaper, we got the word out about the run, and I think we ended up with participation higher than most years in the past,” says Moloughney.

A national donation total has not been finalized yet, but the Terry Fox Run website shows several communities surpassing their fundraising goals.
