Fort Macleod emergency department temporarily closed

Sep 18, 2025 | 9:03 AM

For a period of 12 hours, residents of Fort Macleod will need to look elsewhere if they need emergency medical care.

Alberta Health Services says the emergency department at the Fort Macleod Health Centre closed at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, and is scheduled to reopen at 7:00 p.m.

This is due to an unexpected shortage of clinical personnel and an inability to secure coverage.

Anyone needing emergency care during this time can call 911. EMS calls will be rerouted to Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, which is 49 kilometres away.

Patients can also access emergency departments at the health centres in Pincher Creek, Cardston or Claresholm.

During the closure, nursing staff will remain on-site in Fort Macleod to look after long-term care residents.

Those with non-urgent, health-related questions can phone Health Link at 811.
