A 45-year old Lethbridge man was shot by Medicine Hat Police on Tuesday afternoon after they say he approached officers in an aggressive manner.

Police responded to the call at about 4 p.m. on Sept. 16, 2025 in the 800 block of 14th Street Northeast of Medicine Hat after receiving a report of a man being chased by another man armed with a knife and an axe.

While officers were speaking with the complainant, they said the suspect, carrying both weapons, approached police and the complainant in an aggressive manner.

Police said that the suspect refused to comply to multiple commands to relinquish his weapons, leading to an officer deploying a single less lethal projectile round, successfully preventing the suspect from advancing further.

The suspect was then taken into custody without incident and assessed by EMS personnel.

Through the investigation police said they determined that the accused and the victim are known to each other, and this was not a random attack.

No injuries were sustained by either the victim or any officers, with the accused suffering only minor injuries.

The suspect has been charged with break and enter to commit assault with a weapon, assault, uttering threats, and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

The individual was held in custody pending a judicial interim release hearing, after which he was remanded into custody to appear before provincial court on Sept. 18, 2025.
