Brent Feyter acclaimed as mayor of Fort Macleod

Fort Macleod’s incumbent mayor is running unopposed in the 2025 municipal election, and is therefore set to serve another term.

Brent Feyter is currently wrapping up his second term as mayor, and served one term on council before that.

He says it is a great honour to see that nobody in the community was looking to replace him.

“The biggest feeling is probably a sense of gratefulness and appreciation for our community. It’s been three terms on council, so I would say it’s a vote of confidence, but not taken lightly, for sure,” says Feyter.

Feyter told LNN that the past four years have been busy, not only for town council, but also for the public.

According to the Alberta Government, the population of Fort Macleod has increased by about 20 per cent over the last five years, or 634 residents, to 3,794 people in 2024.

He says the speed at which new homes are being built has escalated over the past term. Previously, around 12 units of housing were being constructed annually, but now, that is closer to 80.

Feyter says he is also proud to have completed nearly three kilometres of paved pathway in the river bottom.

As Fort Macleod continues to grow, Feyter acknowledges that there is plenty of work ahead.

Housing will continue to be a high priority for him, along with new area structure plans to support it.

The municipal government plans to advocate to the province for a new school, especially if population growth remains high.

Feyter adds that he will continue to push for the attraction and retention of physicians, as the Fort Macleod Health Centre’s emergency department has been forced to close several times in recent years due to inadequate staffing.

Although residents of Fort Macleod will not be able to vote on their next mayor, eight candidates are running to fill the six seats on council.
