Tentative deal struck between Alberta government and teachers union

Sep 25, 2025 | 10:40 AM

The Alberta government says it has struck a tentative deal with the union representing 51-thousand teachers provincewide, though the proposal is largely the same as its previous offer.

A copy of the offer, obtained by The Canadian Press, shows it includes covering COVID-19 vaccines for teachers.

That falls in line with the province promising the shots for workers in other sectors, including health care.

Most Albertans will have to pay 100 dollars for the vaccine this year.

The tentative deal includes the same 12 per cent pay increase over four years that teachers previously rejected.

It also keeps the commitment to hire 3,000 more teachers over the next three years.

The offer still needs to be ratified by teachers.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association says says voting is to take place Saturday through Monday, one week ahead of an October 6th strike deadline.

Finance Minister Nate Horner says the deal is good for Alberta’s education system.

The union says it’s not taking a position on the latest offer.

Voting results are expected Monday night.
