Soccer Association ‘thrilled’ that U of L sports dome project moving ahead

Athletes in Lethbridge could soon have a new venue.

The Lethbridge Soccer Association (LSA) says it was thrilled to learn that the University of Lethbridge had received the funding needed to progress with its multi-sport dome project.

LNN is awaiting more details on the dome itself, but we have previously heard that it will include a full-sized synthetic turf field for field sports, two versatile sports courts for basketball, volleyball and other indoor games, as well as a four-lane running track.

Randy Virginillo, Second Vice President of the LSA, explains that it is the next necessary step for their club to be able to provide the services that athletes want and need.

“This new dome offers us a great new potential to expand our time for all of our athletes, inviting more athletes into our program, being able to expand the club as a whole,” says Virginillo. “It’s the largest single piece of the puzzle that has been missing from this club for many years now.”

The LSA has been running soccer programs out of the Servus Sports Centre for over 20 years, and Virginillo says it has been a great facility.

The problem, however, is that Lethbridge has continued to grow.

“Lethbridge has now exceeded over 100,000 people. Our registrations and our ability to accept registrations has been, kind of, at a stranglehold during the winter months, because of the available time and space that we have.”

He adds, “It is booked solid pretty much every day.”

The University of Lethbridge added the following statement:

“The University of Lethbridge continues to advance plans to construct a multi-sport dome that will serve students, Pronghorn Athletics and Recreation, and community sporting organizations across southern Alberta.

On May 28, 2024, the University’s Board of Governors approved a motion committing to a loan to enable the project. This loan will be paid back through the revenues generated by the facility. The Board also made the approval of the project contingent upon securing a defined percentage of external capital funding.

Earlier this year, the University was successful in securing a $200,000 grant from the City of Lethbridge to support the project. The University continues to work closely with donors and internal and external stakeholders to move the project forward.

The University is hopeful it will be able to provide additional information about this project in the coming weeks.”
