International travellers between Canada and the U.S. will be unable to use one port of entry in southern Alberta for the next several months.

Due to its high elevation and harsh winters, the Chief Mountain border crossing only operates from May to September.

It will close for the season at 6:00 p.m. MST on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2025, and reopen on May 14, 2026.

Chief Mountain is located on Highway 6 just east of Waterton Lakes National Park. After continuing south along Highway 17 in Montana, it connects to Highway 89 north of Babb.

Drivers can also access Highway 89 by taking the Carway border crossing, which is open year-round.

Other border crossings in southern Alberta include Coutts and Del Bonita.

The Canada Border Services Agency says, as of Sept. 8, a total of 49,049 travellers crossed the border at Chief Mountain, a decrease of over 8,000 from the previous year.
