Winds of change in southwest Alberta

Sep 29, 2025 | 10:03 AM

The winds of change are blowing in southern Alberta, literally.

In the municipal district of Pincher Creek, where the flatlands roll up into the Rocky Mountains, wind has been king for generations, delivering power through windmills.

But the reeve of Pincher Creek says that is changing.

Rick Lemire says new rules from the province restricting where windmills can go and local concerns that the towering turbines are an eyesore are changing attitudes.

Lemire hopes that new technology will still allow wind to thrive in the area by delivering the same amount of power through fewer turbines.

But he says otherwise the area is good to focus on what it knows best, agriculture.
