Alberta plans to propose new oil pipeline to B.C. coast

Oct 1, 2025 | 2:25 PM

The Alberta government says it plans to submit an application for a new oil pipeline to northwestern British Columbia in the spring of 2026.

The proposal is to be filed to the new federal Major Projects Office, which aims to speed along developments deemed in the national interest.

A submission is expected in the spring of next year.

The province plans to develop the project with the backing of an advisory group that includes three major Canadian crude pipeline operators; Enbridge Inc., Trans Mountain Corp. and South Bow Corp.

The government says Indigenous co-ownership, partnership and perspectives will be critical to every stage of project development.

The province is putting up $14 million to support early planning work on cost estimates, engagement and development of the proposal.

Naheed Nenshi, Leader of Alberta’s New Democrats, issued a statement in response to Wednesday’s announcement and it reads in part:

“Like many Albertans, we were anticipating a big announcement today with good news to build up our country and our energy infrastructure. What we got was not that. There’s no route, there’s no proponent, and there’s no one putting money into this other than the Alberta government, and no commitment from the federal government to repeal the legislation that makes this pipeline impossible. Frankly, there’s nothing here except a vague idea and yet another committee. Danielle Smith herself said it would be “an utter failure” to have the government build a project like this, and yet here we are.”
