Students at the University of Lethbridge (U of L) will play a hands-on role in shaping the future of the community.

The City Scholars program is returning for the fourth year.

It offers post-secondary students Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) by collaborating with the City of Lethbridge, utilizing their academic studies with meaningful experience in a workplace or practice setting.

Meagan Williams, Community Partnership Specialist with the City, says students gain hands-on work experience while meeting their educational requirements.

“Working with students is a great way to connect them with the community they’re learning and living in for four (or more) years, while tackling real world community challenges. It’s a collaborative approach to problem-solving and we gain so much insight from their perspectives and skills,” says Williams.

This semester’s WIL class will explore how to build a more sustainable community that amplifies youth voices.

Some potential projects could include looking at how to make physical infrastructure more resilient, promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, or enhancing resident wellbeing through sustainable initiatives.

Erin Kennett, WIL Instructor at the U of L, says they will have students in programs such as Biological Sciences, Psychology, Addictions Counselling, and Computer Science.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for students to connect with industry experts, build professional skills, and work alongside classmates from other disciplines,” says Kennett. “They’re not just learning – they’re contributing real ideas and perspectives that matter to the City and the community.”
