Jenn Schmidt-Rempel running for re-election on Lethbridge City Council

A current member of Lethbridge City Council is seeking another term in office.

Jenn Schmidt-Rempel has announced her candidacy in the 2025 municipal elections, set for October 8-20.

She provided the following answers to an LNN questionnaire:

Why did you want to run for Lethbridge City Council?

I’m running for Lethbridge City Council because the crucial work started over the last four years is not yet finished, and I want to ensure our city’s future is as strong and vibrant as it deserves to be.

My decision to run for re-election is driven by the need to complete several high-impact initiatives and to champion new ones. Over the past term, I’ve successfully advanced projects in housing, healthcare advocacy, fiscal planning, and business support, and these priorities require continued leadership.

The upcoming term demands a focus on building a smart future by finalizing the Land Use Bylaw, advancing the transit system review, and ensuring our critical services and infrastructure are properly maintained and expanded to support growth. Simultaneously, we must address our core social needs through sustained efforts to build housing across the full continuum, and secure more local healthcare and childcare resources – tasks that require relentless advocacy at the provincial and federal levels. I will also continue to focus on strengthening our economy by supporting our local businesses, working to attract new investment and talent, and strengthening the crucial regional, provincial, and federal relationships that directly impact our city’s economic development and social wellbeing.

I’m running to keep building a Lethbridge where decisions are driven by evidence, accountability, and respect.

What personal or professional experience do you have that you feel would make you a good city councillor?

My record on council speaks for itself. Over the past four years, I’ve proven that I listen, ask the hard questions, and do the work. I come to meetings prepared, and I’m out in the community, meeting with and hearing what residents and community organizations have to say. That will continue.

My background as a small business owner and community advocate gives me a practical, hands-on perspective of what residents and businesses need to succeed. On Council, I’ve championed housing and childcare, advocated for physician recruitment and healthcare investment, helped shape the City’s Long-Term Financial Sustainability Framework, and supported economic growth in key sectors such as agri-food processing, logistics, creative industries, and tourism. I understand how economic development works, and how our social policies and supports are interconnected with economic development – and that we need healthy social policies to support a healthy economy.

I’ve also served on the Police Commission, the Premier’s Advisory Task Force on Ukraine, Economic Development Lethbridge, and eight Team Lethbridge missions – bringing both local and provincial experience to the Council table.

What would be a few of your top priorities if elected?

  • Housing & Social Supports: Advancing the Municipal Housing Strategy, continuing work on the Encampment Strategy, and working with local partners to expand supportive, affordable, and market housing.
  • Healthcare & Mental Health: Advocating for expanded healthcare services, more physicians, and the mental health services we need as a Southern Alberta hub.
  • Core Services & Fiscal Responsibility: Delivering strong services – such as transit, policing, and infrastructure – while ensuring financial responsibility through the Long-Term Financial Sustainability Framework.
  • Business & Economic Growth: Supporting entrepreneurs and local businesses while advancing sector development and investment in agrifood, logistics, technology, and tourism. Strengthening our workforce through graduate retention, so graduates can stay, work, and build their futures in Lethbridge, as well as new talent attraction so we can grow our services and industry.
  • Community & Public Spaces: Strengthening parks, trails, arts, and culture to create a city where people feel connected, safe, and included. We want a Lethbridge where every resident can thrive

Is there anything else you would like to add?

My vision is a future-ready Lethbridge where every resident can thrive, every business can grow, and every family is proud to call our city home. I am a leader that focuses on building a brighter future, together. I’m proud of the progress that has been made over the past four years, but there’s still more work to do – on housing, services, business growth, and community safety. I’m asking for your support so we can keep that momentum going.
