Fire restriction remains for Lethbridge County, despite cooler weather

Lethbridge County is reminding residents that a fire restriction remains in place.

Despite cooler temperatures and rain received last weekend, they say forecasts show an increasing fire risk throughout the week.

“Precipitation expected this weekend may reduce the overall fire risk. We will continue to monitor local weather conditions, vegetation levels, and forecasts to make informed decisions on when it is safe to lift the Fire Restriction,” reads a notice from Lethbridge County.

Prohibited under the Fire Restriction:

  • Controlled burns requiring a fire permit (e.g. burn pits, yard waste, large debris)
  • Fireworks

Allowed: (Must meet the specifications in the County’s Fire Bylaw)

  • Recreational campfires in approved fire pits
  • Burn barrels and incinerators with spark arrestors
  • Charcoal briquette barbecues and wood pellet grills
  • CSA/ULC-approved gas or propane stoves, heaters, and firepits

Some tips the County provided to prevent field and machinery fires include:

  • Clean out equipment regularly to remove debris that can overheat and ignite. Leaf blowers are a helpful tool.
  • Schedule breaks to allow machinery to cool. Overheated parts, like bearings are a common ignition source.
  • Equip each piece of equipment with a fire extinguisher and keep a water truck nearby.
  • Connect with neighbours to coordinate emergency responses and share contact info.
