Striking Alberta teachers seek to have bargaining talks resume Tuesday

Oct 9, 2025 | 12:29 PM

The union representing 51,000 striking Alberta teachers says it has asked the province to resume negotiations starting Tuesday.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association says it is making the move based on the success of recent ongoing unofficial conversations with the province.

It seeks formal talks to begin Tuesday with the provincial negotiator, the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association, and a mediator.

The association declined to provide further details.

Teachers walked off the job Monday amid stalemated discussions over wages and working conditions.

Overcrowded classrooms are a key sticking point, with the province previously promising to hire 3,000 more teachers.

Finance Minister Nate Horner issued the following statement to Pattison Media:
“The ATA finally responded to TEBA’s invitation to get back to the bargaining table and the two parties will be sitting down for formal bargaining talks with the mediator, next Tuesday. Alberta’s government is hopeful that that ATA’s proposal to TEBA is reasonable, fair, and adequately represents the terms that teachers want to see reflected in their deal. We are focussed on a securing a deal that is fair to teachers, students and Alberta taxpayers.”
