Drivers in Lethbridge will soon have a slightly quicker time crossing the coulees.

Effective at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, the City of Lethbridge will be increasing speed limits and changing the merging zones.

The changes, as outlined in a City of Lethbridge news release, will include:

Westbound

  • The alternating/zipper merge is relocated further down the hill, to the east end of the bridge
  • After the bridge, the speed limit rises from 50 km/h to 70 km/h as you travel up the hill
  • Heavy trucks – excluding standard pickup trucks – are still restricted from travelling westbound on Whoop-Up Drive

Eastbound

  • The alternating/zipper merge is relocated further to the east, to the mid-way part of the bridge
  • After the bridge, the speed limit rises from 50 km/h to 60 km/h as you travel up the hill

Signage will be installed to alert drivers to the alterations.

The City says that all of the scheduled bridge maintenance work has been completed, some repair work remains after a large truck struck the underside of the bridge on Aug. 7.

The incident resulted in damage to four of the six steel girders that support the Whoop-Up Drive bridge.
