Alberta Health Services eliminating 400 positions

Oct 17, 2025 | 9:45 AM

Layoffs and the elimination of vacant positions in Alberta’s healthcare sector have begun.

A spokesperson for Alberta Health Services (AHS) says it started the process of laying off 100 filled positions on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

They will also be eliminating 300 vacant positions.

AHS says none of the filled positions involve front-line clinical areas and that this will have no direct impact on front-line clinical services.

The affected jobs are predominantly in corporate services.

“Some of these positions include, but are not limited to, roles in IT, Finance, Human Resources, and Community Engagement & Communications,’ reads a statement from AHS.

Altogether, the agency says the staffing reductions represent around 0.4 per cent of the total AHS workforce.

“AHS is grateful for the contributions of all impacted employees and will support them and their teams in the weeks ahead.”

This is considered to be an internal HR matter, so AHS says it cannot comment any further.
