The Blood Tribe is tearing down a decommissioned medical centre.

They say that demolition work is underway at the old Blood Indian Hospital and Women’s Shelter in Moses Lake.

“The two buildings have been deemed unfit for occupancy. Demolition is necessary and will be carried out in accordance with local safety, environmental, and building regulations,” reads a notice from the Blood Tribe.

The public may notice temporary disruptions such as noise, dust and restricted access during the two-month demolition project.

Safety barriers and signage have been installed, and vehicles may be rerouted as required.

The Blood Indian Hospital first opened in the 1920s.

According to the Cardston Historical Society, it was a racially-segregated facility that started out as a treatment centre for infectious diseases, but later became a general hospital.

It was among the 29 hospitals listed in a 2018 class action lawsuit against the federal government, alleging widespread mistreatment, discrimination, and abuse.

Earlier this year, the Federal Court approved a settlement where those who were abused at these facilities between 1936 and 1981 would receive compensation ranging between $10,000 and $200,000.
