A wrestler from Lethbridge will be attending a major global tournament.

Angelina Ellis-Toddington has been named to Team Canada at the U23 World Wrestling Championships, set to take place Oct. 20-27, 2025, in Novi Sad, Serbia.

She will compete in the women’s 65-kilogram category.

This will be Ellis-Toddington’s second time at the World Wrestling Championships, having competed last year as well.

She says world championship events are a bit different than provincial or national ones.

“It’s a big tournament, lots of lights, often, and just getting around language barriers and being in a different country makes everything a bit different, so it’s nice to know that I’ve been through that before and I know what to expect,” says Ellis-Toddington.

The 23-year-old enters the World Wrestling Championships with an impressive list of accomplishments, including:

  • 2025 U SPORTS Champion – 68kg
  • 2025 Canada West Champion – 68kg
  • U SPORTS Medallist: 2024 – 65kg – Bronze
  • Canada West Medallist: 2024 – 65kg – Silver; 2023 – 67kg – Silver; 2022 – 72kg – Bronze
  • 2023-24 Academic All-Canadian
  • 2022-23 Academic All-Canadian
  • 2021-22 Academic All-Canadian
  • U SPORTS Athlete of the Week: Jan. 17, 2024
  • Canada West Athlete of the Week: Jan. 17, 2024

Ellis-Toddington told LNN that she has been working hard to prepare for the tournament.

“I’ve been doing a lot of wrestling over the summer,” she explained. “I went to some training camps in Europe to get ready, and yeah, I’ve been wrestling six days a week in Calgary and lifting weights and getting on the bike.”

She is in her final year with the University of Calgary Dinos wrestling team, and has been pursuing a degree in kinesiology.

Ellis-Toddington is also set to compete at the CanWest and USPORTS championships, senior national trials, and U23 national trials this year.

Her goal is to eventually compete at the Olympic Games. She is hoping to secure a spot on the 2027 Olympic Trials, and says that a big win at the U23 World Wrestling Championships would go a long way in helping her to qualify for that.
