Three places in southern Alberta are being honoured for their commitments to environmental sustainability, enhancing green spaces, and heritage in cultural and natural environments.

Communities in Bloom held its national awards on Saturday, Oct. 18, in Stratford, Ontario.

The Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens in Lethbridge received a pair of nods.

It was given the Municipal World WinterLife Award for its annual Winter Light Festival.

Volunteer judges Larry Hall and Christine Isaac say that each year, Nikka Yuko undergoes a spectacular transformation from a serene summer retreat into a breathtaking winter wonderland.

They commended the work of volunteers and staff, who weave thousands of sparkling lights throughout the garden, accentuating its natural beauty and cultural features.

“The glowing displays, reflected in the snow, create a magical atmosphere that draws thousands of visitors from near and far,” the judges said.

“For many, the illuminated gardens have become a cherished holiday tradition—an experience of wonder and warmth where families and friends gather to marvel at the lights, sip seasonal beverages, and enjoy festive activities. More than just a visual delight, the Winter Lights Festival offers a place to connect, celebrate, and create lasting memories in the heart of winter.”

Nikka Yuko was also given the Special Attractions Evaluated award with a “5 Blooms – Bronze” rating.

As well, Communities in Bloom gave the Town of Pincher Creek and Brooks Region its Circle of Excellence – Non Evaluated recognition.
