VIRGINIA — Canada’s Brad Jacobs improved to 4-0 at the Pan Continental Curling Championships with a pair of victories Wednesday.

Jacobs, vice Marc Kennedy, second Brett Gallant and lead Ben Hebert out of Calgary’s Glencoe Club thumped New Zealand 7-1 in a game that lasted just seven ends after an earlier 14-6 victory over South Korea.

Canada and the John Shuster of the United States were tied atop the men’s standings with 4-0 records ahead of China and Japan both at 3-1.

The Canadians opened with three in the first end and stole two in the second en route to Wednesday evening’s win over Sean Becker’s team from New Zealand.

Jacobs’ foursome withstood a strong first half from South Korea’s Soo-Hyuk Kim, whose rink pushed the Canadians early before fading after the fifth-end break.

In women’s action, Ottawa’s Rachel Homan (2-1) defeated Mexico’s Adriana Camarena (0-3) 9-3.

Canada set the tone early with three in the first end. Homan’s draw to bite the four-foot rings in the fifth end produced another three.

Homan plays twice Thursday, facing South Korea’s Eunji Gim (1-2) and China’s Rui Wang (3-0).

Homan, vice Tracy Fleury, second Emma Miskew and lead Sarah Wilkes are the reigning world, Canadian and Pan Continental champions.

The Ottawa foursome is a favourite to win the women’s berth at the Montana’s Curling Trials next month in Halifax, and represent Canada in February’s Olympic Games.

Homan’s team played seven games in six days en route to winning the Grand Slam’s Co-op Tour Challenge on Sunday in Nisku, Alta., before travelling to Minnesota and playing their first game Tuesday.

Alternate Rachelle Brown drew in for a second straight game Wednesday as the foursome rested lead Wilkes on Wednesday. Miskew sat out Tuesday’s win over New Zealand.

“The sweepers need a little bit of a break from last week,” Homan explained.

“We feel really fortunate that Rachelle decided to join us and be full-time with us and help us in all the areas that we’re working on. It’s been such a great fit and we’re just so fortunate to have her. She can come in and play at every position on our team.”

Brown, a 2019 Canadian champion as a member of Chelsea Carey’s team, has been Homan’s alternate for two seasons.

“It’s an absolute honour to wear the Maple Leaf, and honestly, to play with these world-class humans and curlers, and just get to go out there and represent Canada and do Canada proud,” said Brown. “I’m very grateful for the chance to get out there and throw a couple rocks.”

The Pan Continental is a regional qualifier for the men’s and women’s world championships in 2026.

Canada is already assured a berth as the host country of the women’s championship March 14-22 in Calgary.

The top four countries on the men’s side in the Pan Continental will join host United States in the world championship March 28 to April 5 in Ogden City, Utah.
