Ensuring Safety

Alberta RCMP provides Halloween safety tips

Oct 29, 2025 | 4:00 PM

Alberta RCMP has released a list of safety tips ahead of Halloween this Friday.

Whether you’re trick-or-treating, handing out candy, attending a party, or staying home, police say we can all do our part to ensure everyone’s safety.

Trick-or-treaters:

  • Wear brightly coloured costumes and use reflective tape or glow sticks to be more visible to drivers.
  • Use a flashlight and stay in well-lit areas.
  • Wear makeup instead of a mask. Masks can impair vision and hearing. If wearing a mask, remove it while walking from house to house and crossing streets.
  • Always walk on sidewalks.
  • Stay on one side of the street at a time and avoid crisscrossing back and forth across roads. Cross the street where and when it’s safe to do so.
  • Stay on the doorstep or sidewalk. Never go inside the home or car of someone you don’t know.
  • Travel in groups if unsupervised.

Adults:

  • Keep porch lights or external security lights on.
  • Keep doors clear and accessible. Avoid decorations that pose a tripping hazard.
  • Don’t invite children inside your home.
  • Inspect your children’s candy for any signs of tampering or unwrapped items.
  • Only pass out commercially wrapped candy and snacks.
  • Keep pets indoors, as they may become scared of children in costumes.
  • If attending a party, do not drive impaired and ensure you don’t take substances from people you don’t know or trust.
