Poppy Campaign kicks off as Lethbridge Legion prepares for Remembrance Day

Oct 29, 2025 | 12:36 PM

The General Stewart Branch No. 4 of the Royal Canadian Legion will begin a series of ceremonies leading up to Remembrance Day in Lethbridge.

The Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign begins on Saturday, Nov. 1, with poppies distributed by youth and cadet groups throughout local businesses.

Branch President Dave Martin says the campaign “provides Canadians with the opportunity to remember by providing them with a poppy and to participate at Remembrance Day services.”

On Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m., the public is invited to a poppy flag-raising ceremony at Lethbridge City Hall, followed by the unveiling of the Veteran Commemorative Crosswalk.

The crosswalk was created in collaboration between Legion members and the City of Lethbridge.

It reportedly features a silhouette of the mourning soldier as seen atop the Lethbridge cenotaph, along with the phrases Lest We Forget in English and French and Ihtaissksini’pa in Blackfoot.

Interpretation was provided by Blood Tribe Elder Martin Heavy Head, and the phrase means “so that we know.”

Additional events include cleaning veteran markers at Mountain View Cemetery on Nov. 5 at 9:30 a.m., a cheque presentation for the Lethbridge Salute Our Veterans Project on Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m., and Legion participation at the Lethbridge Hurricanes Military Appreciation Night on Nov. 7.

Remembrance Day ceremonies on Nov. 11 will include a 10:45 a.m. vigil at both Exhibition Park and the City Hall Cenotaph.

The outdoor event is set to feature the 20th Independent Field Battery and a flyover by a C-17 Globemaster and Harvard IV aircraft, weather permitting.

The Lethbridge Military Museum is set to be open to the public from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 11, with free admission.
