Lethbridge Polytechnic has joined the inaugural consortium for the AI Workforce Readiness (AIWR) program, a national initiative led by the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), one of Canada’s three national AI centres.

Supported by Google.org, the program brings together 29 Canadian polytechnics, colleges, and universities, representing more than 500,000 students.

It aims to close the national AI skills gap and prepare the next generation of workers, with about 125,000 students expected to benefit each year.

“At Lethbridge Polytechnic, we’re committed to giving students career-ready skills they need through programs that evolve with industry,” said Dr. Brad Donaldson, president and CEO.

“Our partnership in the AIWR opens new doors for students, providing resources and opportunities that will help them thrive both in their studies and beyond.”

The program lets educators work with Amii to create AI resources for their courses.

These open-source teaching materials will integrate AI skills into existing programs, according to Lethbridge Polytechnic.

Each package is set to include reading materials, real-world case studies, videos, activities, and lab assessments to help students develop an AI skill set.

“Amii’s goal has always been to make AI education accessible, and the AI Workforce Readiness program is the culmination of that commitment,” said Cam Linke, CEO of Amii.

“By fostering national collaboration, we are addressing the AI skills gap and empowering both instructors and students — including those in underserved communities — with the necessary AI literacy skills and resources.”

Amii is an Alberta-based non-profit intended to support world-leading AI and machine learning research and to bring scientific advancements into industry across Canada.
