Fort Macleod emergency department temporarily closed

Nov 19, 2025 | 8:22 AM

Residents of Fort Macleod who need emergency healthcare will have to go elsewhere.

Alberta Health Services says the emergency department at the Fort Macleod Health Centre shut its doors at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 19. It is set to reopen at 8:00 p.m. the same day.

The closure is reportedly due to an unexpected shortage of clinical personnel and an inability to secure coverage.

Patients who are having a medical emergency are asked to call 911. EMS calls will be redirected to Chinook Regional Hospital, which is 49 kilometres away.

Emergency rooms can also be accessed at Chinook Regional Hospital or the Health Centres in Pincher Creek, Cardston or Claresholm.

Those with non-urgent health questions can phone Health Link at 811 at any time.

During the closure, nursing staff will remain on-site at the Fort Macleod Health Centre to look after long-term care residents.
