Train derailment reported in Vulcan County

UPDATE (7:34 a.m. Friday): The Transportation Safety Board says its members have been deployed and will conduct an investigation into the train derailment.

Original Story:

Dozens of rail cars are in the ditch after an incident on Thursday in southern Alberta.

A spokesperson with CPKC Rail says, just after noon, 34 cars derailed near the Village of Champion in Vulcan County.

They say 31 of the cars were carrying grain products, while three had vegetable oil.

No dangerous goods were involved.

In a statement issued at 3:00 p.m., CPKC crews were working to clean the site up.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation. Nobody was hurt.

Champion is approximately 75 kilometres north of Lethbridge.
