YWCA Lethbridge receives funds to continue Safe Visitation program

The only free program of its kind in Lethbridge will be able to keep operating.

The Alberta Government has announced $150,000 in funding for YWCA Lethbridge’s Safe Visitation program.

Nathan Neudorf, MLA for Lethbridge-East, says grants for the YWCA and other organizations across the province will go a long way in reducing family violence.

“The YWCA Lethbridge plays an essential role in our community, working tirelessly to end family violence, as well as providing survivors with a safe place and the critical supports they need to heal and move forward,” says Neudorf.

Jill Young, CEO of YWCA Lethbridge, explains that the money will help cover rising costs.

“Receiving this funding, this $150,000, just reinforces the importance of safe visitation in Lethbridge,” says Young. “It’s such a vital program to be able to stay connected and have a safe and supportive environment for the families that need our services.”

The Safe Visitation program allows children to maintain safe contact with both of their parents during separation or conflict.

There are different entrances for the custodial and non-custodial parent, and all interactions are supervised by YWCA staff. Families who do not live in the same city can take part in supervised virtual or phone visits.

Staff can also offer support with safety planning and parenting goals.

“We are the only organization in this area that actually offers this service at no cost to the family, so we really recognize those barriers, especially economic and financial barriers to families, especially during these difficult times,” Young adds.

Families must be referred to the Safe Visitation program and the YWCA Lethbridge through communication with the Child and Family Services Association at 403-381-5543. Parents can also self-refer.
