Another major donation has been made to help build a state-of-the-art cardiac centre in Lethbridge.

The Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation has announced that it has received a donation of $100,000 from Barb and Mac MacLean.

They were both born and raised in Lethbridge and have deep roots in the community.

The pair have witnessed decades of innovation and progress in local healthcare, and say they were inspired to give back in a way that honours their family history while shaping a stronger future.

Barb says heart disease has touched their family, as both of her parents passed away due to cardiac complications.

Their granddaughter has worked as a nurse in the Chinook Regional Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit for the last three years, and has witnessed firsthand the impact of heart-related illness and loss. Her partner, a First Responder, also experiences the realities of cardiac emergencies every day.

Barb says, “This cause touches every family in some way. Supporting the Bringing Hearts Home Campaign means helping ensure that the best possible care is available right here in Lethbridge, for our children, grandchildren, and the entire region.”

Mac adds, “This is the best money ever spent in my life because it is guaranteed to save a life.”

The Bringing Hearts Home Campaign is raising $30 million to enhance cardiac services and create a dedicated Cardiac Centre of Excellence at Chinook Regional Hospital.

Dr. Sayeh Zielke is the chair of the Southern Alberta Cardiac Sciences Advisory Cabinet and a physician lead for Cardiac Services in the hospital.

She expressed her gratitude for the family’s leadership and generosity.

“Your generosity brings hope and healing to families across southern Alberta. Because of your kindness, lives are changed, and our community grows stronger. Thank you for believing in this vision and helping bring world-class cardiac care close to home,” says Zielke.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in southern Alberta.
