Winter storm warning issued for southern Alberta

Another weather alert has been issued for the region.

Environment Canada issued a “yellow” winter storm warning for nearly all of southern Alberta on Wednesday, Dec. 17.

They say there have wind gusts between 80 and 120 kilometres an hour, and these conditions will continue to move throughout the region this afternoon.

“From Highway 3 to the US Border, for locations such as Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, blowing snow may be less widespread, but periods of heavy flurries may combine with strong winds to generate very low visibility locally,” reads the warning from Environment Canada.

Some of the other impacted communities include Coaldale, Taber, Milk River, Cardston, Fort Macleod, Claresholm, Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass, and Waterton Lakes National Park.

The weather forecaster says there may also be “sharp drops” in temperature, as much as 14 degrees in one hour. This can create dangerous driving conditions.

“There, any remaining slush or pooling water is likely to freeze as temperatures drop rapidly this afternoon and evening.”

Visibility will likely be reduced to near zero at times, and road closures are possible.

As well, the “orange” wind warning issued Tuesday remains in effect.
