Two southern Albertans have received promotions within the Alberta Government.

Taber-Warner MLA Grant Hunter was sworn in as environment minister in a ceremony on Friday, January 2, 2026.

This follows the resignation of former minister Rebecca Shulz earlier this week.

He issued the following statement to LNN:

“I am honoured and thrilled to get to work after being sworn in as Alberta’s new Minister of Environment and Protected Areas. I look forward to continue building on the work and success of Minister Rebecca Schulz and fulfilling the mandate given to me by our Premier Danielle Smith.”

“I will have more to say in the coming weeks.”

Hunter enters his new role with a decade of political experience, having first been sworn into office following the 2015 provincial election.

He was initially elected as part of the Wildrose Party, and as a member of the opposition, served in three different Shadow Minister positions.

Since being re-elected in 2019 as a member of the United Conservative Party, Hunter has been the Associate Minister for both Red Tape Reduction and Water.

Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright was also named the new Chief Government Whip.

The first-term representative has worked in positions such as Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Health (South) and Military Liaison.
