Lethbridge Police highlighting intersection safety

Police officers in Lethbridge are taking the time this month to remind drivers and pedestrians of the importance of intersection safety.

In 2025, the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) reports that there were 86 collisions at the city’s 10 intersections with the highest risk of collisions, 15 of which resulted in injuries and one in a fatality.

Given the “potentially devastating” impact of such collisions, LPS says it has a low tolerance for them.

However, it is neither feasible nor practical to have a police officer at every major intersection.

“This is where intersection safety devices, more commonly known as red light cameras, come into play. These devices have proven to be effective in reducing collisions and casualties by getting motorists to reduce their speed and stop for red lights,” reads a notice from LPS. “When conventional enforcement is not an option, these devices are a tool to help make the roads safer for everyone.”

LPS states that enforcement alone is not enough to make Lethbridge’s intersections safer.

They are asking all drivers to be cautious when it comes to intersections. Some tips provided by LPS include:

  • Always look before proceeding through an intersection – remember the road is also shared with pedestrians
  • Leave an abundance of room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front
  • Ensure it is safe to turn left before making the turn
  • Ensure you come to a complete stop at red lights and stop signs
  • Adjust your driving for the road conditions
