Taber arena explosion not caused by human error

The Town of Taber has provided an update on last month’s explosion at the Community Centre.

On December 17, 2025, an explosion occurred in the area of the small ice arena Zamboni room. This caused significant damage within the arena and curling rink areas.

Following the explosion, there was a secondary, localized fire.

Officials have now confirmed that the incident was not caused by human error.

It was the result of a failure of a component within the fuel system of the ice resurfacer. The town says there was no procedural failure, and staff followed established operating procedures.

The fuel system failure resulted in a propane leak, which created a gas cloud within the surfacer room and across the small ice surface. An electric heater in the area was identified as the source of ignition, which caused the explosion.

Fire Chief Steve Munshaw says, “Even when procedures are followed and there is no human error, incidents like this are an important reminder of why strong maintenance programs and emergency preparedness matter. Our teams train for these situations, and that preparedness helped ensure the incident was managed safely.”

“We were fortunate no one was injured, and we take that as reinforcement of the importance of ongoing readiness, not as a reason to be complacent.”

An independent occupational hygienist assessed whether hazardous materials may be present in the building. They checked all areas that did not visibly appear to be affected.

Samples from all areas have been collected and are currently being tested. Until those results are received, the Town says crews cannot begin to remove any of the debris.

The Community Centre utilizes interconnected systems for gas, water, electrical, fire alarms, and other life-safety systems, meaning that if one of them has been impacted by this incident, it could affect the others.

Once the Town has received the lab results, it will determine how the debris must be handled and removed.

It is still too early to put a price tag on the damages and recovery efforts.

The Town says it is working with its insurance provider, and assessments are ongoing. They say this process could take weeks or even months to complete.

At this time, no decisions have been made regarding a potential new recreation facility or what the future of the current building holds. Council is in the early stages of discussions only, and there are many things to consider before such decisions can be made.

The Town of Taber says it remains committed to safety, accountability, and ongoing transparency as recovery work continues.

“We recognize that this incident has disrupted programs, displaced user groups, affected leaseholders and their businesses, and created uncertainty for many in our community,” reads a news release from the Town. “We sincerely thank the public, leaseholders, and facility user groups for their patience, kindness, and understanding throughout this process.”

It continues, “We also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many communities across Southern Alberta and throughout the rest of Alberta who have shown generosity and support. Offers of ice time, messages of encouragement, and practical assistance have made a meaningful difference. That support has meant the world not only to the municipality, but to the community as a whole.”

Mayor Andrew Prokop thanks the public and neighbouring communities for their support.

The municipality has entered the Kraft Hockeyville contest in hopes of winning up to $250,000 for arena upgrades and the chance to host an NHL pre-season game.

The contest is driven by community support, so the Town is asking everyone who has used the Community Centre to submit entries. You can learn more in the article linked below:
