Toronto Argonauts re-sign all-star returner Janarion Grant

TORONTO — The Toronto Argonauts have locked up a key piece, re-signing American return specialist Janarion Grant.

Grant played 15 games the Argos last season, averaging 22.9 yards per kick return and 12.8 yards per punt return.

The 32-year-old Rutgers product spent the first four seasons of his CFL career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, winning the Grey Cup in 2019 and 2021, then signed in Toronto in May 2024 and added another CFL championship to his name that year.

He was named the CFL’s most outstanding special teams player in 2024, and was an all-star in both 2022 and 2024.

Grant has 13 return touchdowns over 72 regular-season games, and has averaged 13.3 yards per punt return and 23.8 yards per kick return.

He also has three return touchdowns in the playoffs, including the longest punt-return in Grey Cup history — a 102-yard dash into the end zone in the 2022 final.

The Argos added another special teams player to their roster Friday, signing American kicker Matt Ammendola.

The 29-year-old Philadelphia native comes to the CFL after logging time with several NFL teams, including Carolina, the New York Jets, Houston, Kansas City, Arizona and Green Bay. He went 24-for-35 on his field goal attempts over 20 career NFL games.

Winnipeg inks DL Ceresna

WINNIPEG — The Blue Bombers have signed American defensive lineman Jake Ceresna to a two- year contract after acquiring his rights from the Edmonton Elks.

The 31-year-old Ceresna is coming off an injury-plagued 2025 campaign with the Elks where he finished the season with 16 defensive tackles, one sack and one interception in 11 games.

He has 46 sacks across his CFL career, including a career-high 12 in 2023 with the Elks.

The six-foot-four, 295-pound Ceresna also has 201 defensive tackles, seven forced fumbles and one interception across seven seasons in the league.

Redblacks re-sign global DL Ta’ala

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Redblacks have re-signed global defensive lineman Blessman Ta’ala.

Ta’ala, 26, played 17 games last season for Ottawa, registering 16 defensive tackles and four sacks. The American Samoa product has played 47 games over three seasons with the Redblacks (2023-25), registering 30 total tackles, six sacks and one forced fumble.

Elks extend national fullback Plamondon

EDMONTON — National fullback Jacob Plamondon is staying in Edmonton, signing a one-year extension with the Elks.

The 27-year-old from Red Deer, Alta., has played all four seasons of his CFL career for Edmonton, recording 21 special tackles over 51 regular-season games.
