Street signs have long been the way of controlling traffic in one southern Alberta town, but that will soon change.

The Town of Fort Macleod says its first street light will be installed this year.

It will be utilized at the intersection of Highway 3 and 18th.

“Following consultation with Alberta Transportation, this signal has been required due to increased through-traffic and local growth, including the Macleod Landing subdivision (behind Jon’s Your Independent Grocer),” reads a news release from the Town of Fort Macleod.

According to the municipality’s Transportation Master Plan, more than 11,000 vehicles pass through the intersection every day.

With new homes and streets being created, they say traffic volumes will continue to increase.

Its Annual Safety Survey from 2025 notes concerns about traffic control and pedestrian crossing safety.

Installation is set to take place “this spring and summer.”

The public can expect minor impacts to traffic during installation, and drivers and pedestrians are asked to follow temporary signage and new signals.
