Cultivating Community: How Excite Lethbridge Is Growing Agriculture in Southern Alberta

Formed in 2025 from the restructuring of the long-standing Lethbridge & District Exhibition, Excite Lethbridge now operates as a municipally supported, not-for-profit organization focused on elevating agriculture and other community-oriented events through the Lethbridge Trade & Convention Centre and broader programming. In tandem with the newly refocused Lethbridge & District Agricultural Society (LDAS), which returns to agriculture-specific advocacy and engagement, Excite Lethbridge brings energy, ambition and strategic vision to the region’s event landscape, and agriculture sits squarely at centre stage.

AG EXPO AND THE NORTH AMERICAN SEED FAIR

One of the most significant annual pillars of this work is Ag Expo and the North American Seed Fair, southern Alberta’s largest and longest-running agricultural trade show. Taking place each February at the Lethbridge Trade & Convention Centre, Ag Expo draws hundreds of exhibitors from across Canada, the United States and beyond. More than just a showcase of tractors and tools, the Expo blends cutting-edge technology with the hard-earned wisdom of traditional farming. Attendees encounter advanced machinery, state-of-the-art irrigation systems, livestock supplies, seed innovations and agrochemical developments all under one roof. The North American Seed Fair, one of the continent’s oldest seed showcases, and the thinkAG Career Discovery Fair, which introduces high school students to agricultural career paths, highlight the event’s blend of heritage and future-focused opportunity.

Ag Expo does more than just display equipment, it creates invaluable spaces for producers, innovators, educators and students to talk, learn, plan and collaborate. In a field that evolves rapidly with technological advances and demographic shifts, such connections are vital.

AGGIE DAYS

That educational purpose is further exemplified by Aggie Days, returning to Lethbridge in March 2026 after a multi-year pause. Partnering closely with LDAS and Agriculture for Life, this program brings Grade 4–6 students into interactive agricultural learning environments where they can experience farm life, meet commodity groups, and learn about animal care, dairy production and farm safety. In a community moving steadily toward urbanization, such engagement is key to bridging the gap between consumer and producer and ensuring the next generation understands where their food comes from and why it matters.

LETHBRIDGE FARMERS’ MARKET

From June through October each year, Excite Lethbridge also produces the Lethbridge Farmers’ Market, a weekly gathering that knits local growers, makers and artisans into the fabric of the city’s food ecosystem. These markets are more than weekend outings, they’re direct economic lifelines for small producers and craftsmen, giving consumers access to fresh, local produce and handcrafted goods while strengthening the regional food economy. As the city’s only Alberta-approved Farmers’ Market, the market ensures at least 80 per cent of vendors make, bake or grow their product right here in Alberta.

LETHBRIDGE & DISTRICT PRO RODEO

Summer in southern Alberta wouldn’t be complete without the Lethbridge & District Pro Rodeo, an event that pulses with the spirit and tradition of western sport. Pairing some of the most skilled riders and horses under the prairie sky, the rodeo taps into the ranching roots that have sustained this region for generations. This athletic celebration, part of the larger Whoop-Up Days festival, not only draws spectators from far and wide but also reinforces the enduring link between agricultural work and cultural pride.

What unites all these events, from massive trade shows to student learning days and weekly markets, is Excite Lethbridge’s commitment to connection. By providing platforms where farmers and families, business leaders and students, producers and policymakers mingle, learn and grow together, the organization fosters a deeper, more dynamic understanding of agriculture’s role in our community and economy.

In doing so, Excite Lethbridge isn’t just hosting events, it’s nurturing a shared agricultural identity. Through education, innovation and celebration, it ensures that agriculture continues to flourish in southern Alberta not only as a business sector, but as a backbone of community life.
