It was a successful outing by local athletes at a major provincial competition.

The 2026 Alberta Winter Games wrapped up in the northern Lakeland Region on Monday, Feb. 16.

More than 100 competitors from southern Alberta (Zone 1) took part, claiming a total of 38 medals, the fourth-highest among the eight provincial zones.

Those include 13 gold, eight silver and 17 bronze.

Lethbridge’s Claire Peake was, perhaps, the most successful local at the event, walking away with three gold medals and one bronze.

The speed skater had first-place finishes in the female 1,500 metre, 1,000 metre and 500 metre events, while ending third in the 3,000 metre final. These were all in the age 14-15 category.
