The Town of Coaldale reported a strong year of growth and investment in 2025, with building permit values showing momentum in both residential and non-residential sectors.

According to Deputy CAO and Director of Growth and Investment Cameron Mills, Coaldale recorded $60.6 million in total building permits in 2025, including $50.5 million in residential permits–a notable rise from $12.6 million in 2023.

Non-residential investment remained strong as well, according to statistics.

Coaldale’s three-year average for commercial and industrial permits stands at approximately $42.3 million–3.7 times higher than the neighbouring town of Taber ($11.5 million) and nearly eight times higher than similarly sized Blackfalds ($5.3 million).

“Coaldale continues to be a community where investment is welcomed, and growth is happening,” said Mayor Jack Van Rijn.

“These statistics are a strong reflection of the confidence that residents, developers, and businesses have in our Town and in Coaldale’s future. They also speak to the value of the work that has gone into long-term planning, strategic infrastructure investment, and creating the conditions for responsible growth. We are encouraged by the momentum we’re seeing, and we remain committed to supporting sustainable development that strengthens our community over the long term.”

Mills added, “What stands out is not just the scale of investment, but the balance we’re starting to see. Coaldale has built a strong non-residential growth story over the past several years, and now residential activity is accelerating in a meaningful way as supply begins to catch up to demand.”

Looking ahead, several residential projects are underway, including in the Town’s newest subdivision, Malloy Landing.

“The good news is that what happened in 2025 in terms of residential construction is really only the beginning,” said Mills. “With additional residential projects moving ahead—including activity in Malloy Landing—we expect to see continued momentum in 2026. That growth is important not only because it helps expand housing supply, but because it reflects growing confidence in Coaldale as an attractive, affordable place to live and raise a family.”
