Half of recall petitions against Alberta governing caucus confirmed to have failed

Feb 27, 2026 | 12:42 PM

Elections Alberta says four more recall petitions against members of Premier Danielle Smith’s caucus have failed.

That means half of the two dozen petitions launched against United Conservative legislature members late last year have come up short.

One of the unsuccessful campaigns confirmed by Elections Alberta was against Agriculture Minister R.J. Sigurdson.

The agency says the campaign collected roughly nine per cent of the nearly 16,000 signatures it needed to force a constituency-wide vote.

Sigurdson says in a public letter that the low turnout goes to show the level of support he has in the riding.

Two more petitions were due to Elections Alberta earlier this week, but the agency says it can’t provide an update on the status of those campaigns quite yet.
