One person hospitalized following Lethbridge house fires

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) is investigating two house fires from the last few days.

The first occurred on Friday, Feb. 27, when 20 firefighters were called to a home on the 1600 block of 2 Ave North at 6:40 a.m.

Members reported seeing smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home.

The blaze was extinguished quickly, and crews were able to keep it from spreading to nearby properties.

Nobody was hurt.

Two days later, however, one resident was hospitalized in a separate residential fire.

This took place at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Mar. 1, at a home on the 100 block of Blackfoot Boulevard West.

A total of 24 firefighters arrived to find a fire in the basement, which was put out quickly.

It was contained to one room, and LFES says closed interior doors helped to slow the spread of smoke and fire.

All residents got out of the home, but one person was treated for smoke inhalation at Chinook Regional Hospital.

The causes of both fires remain under investigation.

LFES says this is a good opportunity to remind residents to test their smoke alarms every month and to replace batteries as needed.

The public is also encouraged to make a clear fire escape plan and to practice it regularly.
