Picture Butte couple supports cardiac care close to home through $100,000 securities gift

The Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation (CRHF) is proud to recognize the generosity of a couple from Picture Butte who are making a significant investment into the Bringing Hearts Home campaign.

Wayne Hawthorne and Marilyn Cortez, residents of the close-knit agricultural community in southern Alberta, will see their recent $100,000 securities gift help advance the campaign which is focused on establishing a Cardiac Centre of Excellence at Chinook Regional Hospital.

The Cardiac Centre of Excellence is expected to expand access to advanced cardiac diagnostics and treatment for patients across southern Alberta, reducing the need for patients from communities like Picture Butte to travel outside the region for care.

Campaign officials say the couple’s leadership reflects the strength and generosity of communities across southern Alberta, including rural communities like Picture Butte where neighbours support neighbours, and where support for local healthcare continues to grow from town to town.

Through a donation of publicly traded securities, campaign officials say Wayne and Marilyn have chosen a tax-efficient way to support life-saving cardiac care in the region, ensuring patients and families can access the care they need, closer to home.

With deep roots in the local agricultural and hog farming community, and after experiencing the challenges of travelling to Calgary for cardiac care, officials say Wayne and Marilyn were inspired to give in support of bringing care closer to where people live.

For families in Picture Butte and surrounding communities, this means reduced travel, faster access to care, and better outcomes close to home.

“Thanks to the CRH Foundation for providing an easy way to give through securities and support the Bringing Hearts Home Campaign,” says Cortez. “From our hearts to yours, may they be strong.” Hawthorne adds, As Percy Ross once said, ‘He who gives while he lives knows where it goes.’ It’s a quote I’ve always believed in.”

“This is what community leadership looks like,” says Dr. Sayeh Zielke, Chair of the Southern Alberta Cardiac Sciences Advisory Cabinet. “Support from communities like Picture Butte ensures that patients across the region can receive timely, life-saving care closer to home, surrounded by the people and places they know.”

“We are incredibly grateful to Wayne and Marilyn, and to the broader Picture Butte community, for their generosity,” shares Crystal Elliott, CEO of the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation. “It is especially meaningful to see individuals like Wayne and Marilyn step forward and walk alongside us in this work. This campaign is truly regional, with communities across southern Alberta from Picture Butte to Lethbridge and beyond each playing a role in bringing advanced cardiac care closer to home.”

With more than $27 million raised toward its $30 million goal, officials say the campaign continues to build momentum, driven by donors from communities throughout the region.
