Snowfall Warnings remain in place for parts of southern Alberta Thursday.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), periods of heavy snow will continue today, although amounts will vary widely, with general amounts of 10 to 15 cm expected by Thursday night.

Officials say heavier amounts of 25 cm or more are possible, particularly for higher elevations west of Fort Macleod, and near Waterton Lakes National Park.

North of Lethbridge, heavy snow will continue today, with total amounts of 25 to 40 cm expected.

ECCC says strong northwest winds are causing poor visibility and blowing snow. Winds are also causing snow drifts in a number of places, including the Trans Canada Highway near Gleichan.

Officials say one report received from Gleichan stated that snow drifts there were measured to be between 60 to 70 cm in some spots. Snow is expected to end this evening.

In the meantime, meteorologists say travel will likely be challenging and visibility reduced at times.

Motorists are reminded to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions and allow extra time for travel.

If driving, turn on your lights, slow down and maintain a safe following distance.
