Executed 67 outstanding warrants, dismantled 34 encampments

Police boost enforcement in downtown Lethbridge following rise in calls

Lethbridge residents may have noticed an increased police presence in the downtown core as officers ramp up enforcement.

Police say complaints and calls for service — particularly along 2 Avenue A North — have increased significantly in recent months, extending several blocks in all directions.

Using CompStat data and feedback from affected businesses, the service has deployed more resources to support targeted enforcement.

The police service says the added resources include both overt and covert policing and are intended to supplement existing strategies focused on crime prevention, public safety and holding offenders accountable.

The enhanced enforcement this month has resulted in more than 120 individuals being addressed for open drug use, with officers reportedly continuing a zero-tolerance approach and seizing illicit substances.

Officers say they have executed 67 outstanding warrants and dismantled 34 encampments, removing large amounts of debris.

Encampment cleanups have increased from once to twice per week.

Police say two alleged fentanyl dealers were arrested within encampments and charged with drug trafficking, while six shoplifting suspects were arrested within minutes of reported incidents.

In addition, 1,080 doses of fentanyl were seized for destruction, 44 Criminal Code charges were laid and 10 violation tickets were issued under provincial legislation and municipal bylaws.

Police say a repeat drug trafficking suspect was also arrested, leading to the execution of a search warrant at an apartment where officers seized about 900 doses of fluorofentanyl and recovered stolen electronics.

The police service says it continues to rely on its CompStat model, which analyzes crime trends to identify high-risk areas and guide deployment.
