Medicine Hat breaks 134-year-old weather record on Wednesday; several records set in the area

A 134-year-old weather record fell in the Medicine Hat area on Wednesday.

Environment Canada reported that Medicine Hat dipped down to -5.9 C in the early morning hours on May 6, 2026.

Beating the old weather record of -3.3 C set all the way back in 1892.

The Brooks area broke a 113-year-old record and was even cooler at -7.5 C, lower than the -6.7 C temperature reached in 1913.

In the Bow Island area, it dipped down to -5 C, colder than the 1999 mark of -3.6 C.

Several other areas of southern Alberta hit new lows.

Claresholm reached a low of -5.9 C, below the previous record set in 1959 of -5 C.

Milk River dipped to -6.7 to better the 2025 low of -5.7 C.

It wasn’t quite the ice age in the community known for its connection to Dinosaurs in Drumheller, where it got down to -3.1 C, below the 2014 mark of -2.8 C.

Further north, in the Esther area, northeast of Oyen, a record of -7.8 C was lower than the 2014 mark of -5.7 C.

In southwest Saskatchewan, the Leader area matched a 102-year-old low of -8.3, previously met in 1929.
