Year round funding available to keep children active

With the rising cost of food and fuel, non-profit groups and charities are seeing first hand the impact it’s having on families.

Tony Deys is with Kid Sport Lethbridge Taber, an organization, as the name would suggest, that helps to fund kids wanting to play sports.

“One out of every two kids can not afford to play organized sports,” Deys reveals.

“That’s where Kid Sport comes in. So, parents that are having a hard time being able to afford any type of sport can apply to Kid Sport and they will get some money towards hockey, basketball…baseball. Pretty much any sport. Any team sport. Any individual sport.”

Deys says it’s not just limited to the convential sports field, admitting the landscape has changed somewhat over the years, adding things like summer camps wouldn’t qualify.

The group holds an annual golf tournament and other charity events as a way to raise funds for the program.

In recent years, he adds, it’s also seen the Province step up with much-needed and much-appreciated grant money.
