With its wastewater treatment plant running at close to capacity, the City of Lethbridge is moving forward on some planned $285 million in upgrades.

Work to the facility, last done during the 80’s, would increase its output by about 50 percent – translated, that’s about 20 million litres, per day, more.

Delaying the project, the City believes, would likely increase future costs and create a greater risk of problems costing, it says, taxpayers more in the future.

While it has money set aside in its reserves, it will still need to take out a loan to complete the project in a timely manner, and has asked staff to create a borrowing bylaw for its June 23rd council meeting.
