Lethbridge mayor addresses EMS wages for LFES ambulance staff

As the City of Lethbridge weighs its options for its integrated EMS model, the mayor is also emphasizing the importantance and value of employees within the organization.

In a press release Wednesday, the City stated, that in the combined role of paramedic/firefighter, Lethbridge Fire & Emergency Services members earn close to 40-percent more than the provincial benchmark.

Mayor Blaine Hyggen was asked, during a press conference Wednesday, if there was any discussion of a potential wage rollback.

“They need to paid for what they’re worth and they are doing an absolutely great job,” the mayor countered.

“Of course, we need to be competitive with the rest of the province and this is something that we’ve looked at and dug deep into and will dig deeper when it comes to our budget time.”

The mayor adding that wages account for the largest portion of its annual operating budget.
