Nature conservancy announces land acquisition near Manyberries

May 26, 2026 | 9:26 AM

Update: Includes clarification

A 1,000-plus hectare piece of land near the hamlet of Manyberries in the County of Forty Mile is being preserved for future generations of ranchers and wildlife.

About an hour south of Medicine Hat, the area, known as Sagebrush Flats, will help to protect several different species of birds.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada, who will take stewardship of the project, says the grassland is home to greater sage grouse, considered endangered, and the bank and barn swallow, classified as threatened.

The Alberta Conservation Association, Ducks Unlimited Canada, and the Province of Alberta have long partnered to help in projects such as this, however, an earlier story indicated they provided funding, which was incorrect.
