"Way to build inter-municipal relationships"

Lethbridge City Council gives support to Airdrie infrastructure resolution

The City of Lethbridge is co-sponsoring a resolution at this year’s Alberta Municipalities Convention that, if approved, would ask the Province to spend surplus money in its budget on municipally-operated infrastructure.

Right now, close to two-thirds of provincial infrastructure, like roads and bridges, are maintained by local governments.

Acting Lethbridge mayor Jenn Schmidt-Rempel believes it’s important that municipal governments lobby the Province as a group.

“Certainly working with other communities is a way to build our inter-municipal relationships,” Schmidt-Rempel added.

“It’s a way to put Alberta municipalities to work for us in their advocacy efforts and it helps build alignments with municipalities in Alberta.”

A resolution to support the City of Airdrie’s proposal was passed unanimously at Tuesday’s Lethbridge City Council meeting.
