Police in Lethbridge say they’ve charged a 23-year-old father after a dangerous situation unfolded on Wednesday (May 27) in the 500-block of 1st Avenue South.

A child in an unattended stroller was able use his feet to push himself towards traffic, but was stopped in time by nearby security staff.

His father, whose name is not being released to protect the child’s identity, was apparently nearby slumped against a pillar and found to be extremely intoxicated.

LPS added the man, who made no attempt to retrieve the child, was arrested on scene without incident.

The child was unharmed and turned over to family members following the incident.

The father, meantime, has since been charged with Failing to Provide the Necessaries of Life, and could face more repercussions with already court-imposed restrictions to not consume alcohol.

The accused was scheduled to appear in court Friday. (May 29)
