LPI will give pedestrians added seconds

New safety measures coming to a City of Lethbridge crosswalk near you

Jun 1, 2026 | 10:08 AM

The City of Lethbridge is rolling out a new project to ensure better safety for pedestrians at intersections around town.

Known as Leading Pedestrian Intervals, or LPI, crosswalk signs will change to ‘walk’ a few seconds before vehicle traffic gets a green light.

Done in other cities in Canada and the U-S, it’s meant to increase the visibility of pedestrians in the intersection.

The City adds LPI is particularly helpful for the elderly who might otherwise take a little longer to cross.

The new feature will be added to several more intersections in the coming weeks.

Drivers are reminded, though, to yield to pedestrians, anywhere in the city – especially if you are turning left or right at intersections, with or without the pedestrian head start signal.
